The MIT Strategy Gaming Society made a great showing, taking the top three places in the multiplayer tournament.
The biggest news this year happened the day after Avaloncon, when it was announced that Hasbro was buying out The Avalon Hill Game Company. As a result of this the tournament will be run under a different name in the future (currently it looks like The World Boardgaming Championships) without official sanction from Hasbro.

Yueh and Shambeda mutualled, but Yueh advanced based on a higher seeding after the heat rounds.
Titan 2 Avaloncon 1998 GM David desJardins 39 entrants A record turnout for this event extended the tournament to an unprecedented sixth round. Next year's event will likely close to new entrants on Wednesday evening, to reduce scheduling conflicts later on. Tim Rothenhoefer took out two-time winner (and three-time finalist) Brian Sutton in the first round, only to fall in round 2 to Mike Pustilnik. The other previous winner, Bruno Wolff III, lasted until round 5 before being unseated by Jason Ley. Ed Rothenheber proceeded to defeat Jason in the final and claim the title. I gathered data this year on starting tower in order to determine if the first player has a significant advantage. But what I found was that the second player won slightly more often! So apparently the first player does not have that much of an advantage---there are enough other random factors to compensate.
